Position Summary:
A member of the technical staff who uses their knowledge of respiratory therapy and patient care to provide a variet! y of clinical services.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Performs various therapeutic services including but not limited to aerosol therapy, metered dose inhaler, IPPB, chest physical therapy, oxygen therapy, heliox therapy as determined and/or required by practice setting.
Performs diagnostic procedures including but not limited to Arterial Blood Gas sampling and analysis, pulmonary function testing, oximetry, ETCO2, EEG, sleep testing, EKG, Cardiac Stress Testing, as determined and/or required by practice setting.
Supports mechanical ventilation and BiPAP as required for support of patients with dysfunction of respiratory system.
Participates in emergency response to medical emergencies including but not limited to code blue, trauma response teams, and where required by practice setting neonatal resuscitation. May intubate patientâs airways using endotracheal tubes as determined and/or required by practice setting.!
Provides education and communicates effectively to s! upport patients, patient families, other care givers, and physicians regarding areas of responsibility.
Performs patient assessments and documents appropriate therapy based on approved algorithms, policies, procedures, guidelines, as determined and/or required by practice setting.
Uses time effectively to organize and offer various clinical services with consideration to patient safety, following policies and procedures.
Accurately documents medical services provided consistent with established guidelines, policies and procedures as required by hospital and regulatory standards.
Must be able to work independently and use good judgment.
Participates on air/ground transport team when approved by Manager or Director, performing tasks and responsibilities outlined in the Respiratory Care Air/Ground Transport Policy and if allowed and/or required by practice setting.
Participates in and supports team activities which promote ! high quality patient care.
Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education and/or Experience
Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory care with required didactic and clinical experience in all patient populations.
Required didactic and clinical experience in adult and pediatric patient populations.

Technical Skills
Working knowledge of basic computer systems in order to complete data entry required.
Exposure to various hospital computers and safety systems.
Ability to use email required.
Ability to navigate the internet and Via Christi intranet required.
Ability to use multiple forms of commu! nication devices such as telephones, paging systems, and portable data ! devices.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must be registered (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) at the time of application or is registry eligible as defined by the NBRC. New hires must obtain registry (RRT) within established guidelines dependent upon employeeâs graduation and hire date.
Must meet eligibility requirements for a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license through the Kansas Board of Healing Arts at the time of employment application. State licensure must be obtained prior to the date of hire.
Certified in BLS with the American Heart Association's CPR program within 30 days post date of hire.
Current PALS, NRP as required by practice setting.
VCH-P required within one year of employment, as required by practice setting.

Frequently required to push and pull items, such as patient beds, requiring an initial force of up to 75 lbs with a sustained force of up to 40 lbs.
Frequently required to carry or lift items weighing up to 50 pounds at waist height for distances up to 100 feet.
Frequently required to lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
Sometimes required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing 100-400 pounds and occasionally required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing over 400 pounds.
Tolerate standing and walking for up to 6 hours at a time on hard and soft surfaces.
Frequently perform activities that require stooping, bending and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the day.
Constantly able to effectively communicate verbally and in wr! itten form.
Occasionally required to sit in a stationary posit! ion for up to 30 minutes at one time.
Able to detect and discern both loud and soft sounds.
Able to respond to patient alarms and phone calls.
Uses hands and fingers to perform tasks involving equipment and patients that require gross and fine motor skills.
Requires ability to communicate verbally with patients, patient families, physicians, and hospital staff regarding aspects of care or work within the hospital facility.
Ability to adapt to an ever changing work environment.
Frequently uses visual perception to perform activities such as moving equipment; evaluating patients; and reading clinical monitors, charts, and computer screens.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate infection or other problems with a pat! ient, or environmental issues such as smoke.
Working Conditions:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Adjusts care as needed. Exposure to patients with infectious disease and bodily fluids is expected. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; the risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation or risk of vibration.
Ability to adapt to an ever changing work environment.
Position Scope/Patient Population:
Adult, pediatric, neonatal patient populations in all areas of the hospital.
Adjusts care as needed for population served.
