NURSE TECHNICIAN

Position Summary:
A nursing student that performs the delegated patient care tasks under the direction/supervision of a Registered Nurse/LPN according to the patient's plan of care. Communicates and interacts with other patient care team members to facilitate delivery of care in a manner which promotes patient safety and respects patient rights and dignity. Anticipates patient needs, and consults with RN in order to verify observations. Performs duties and presents oneself in a manner that would lead to high levels of patient satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Participates in routine activities of patient care for the specific unit population of assigned area.
Performs delegated patient care tasks in a timely and efficient! manner, and under the guidance of a Registered Nurse/LPN.
Contributes to continuity of care and effective communication by reporting care provided and changes in the patient's condition to the primary nurse or designed in a timely manner.
Completes tasks that have been successfully completed and competency documented in his/her Nursing School with the exception of IV care and medication administration.
May perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
Must be currently enrolled and a c tively participating in a state approved RN nursing program or a graduate of such program and waiting for NCLEX results. Must have successfully completed the first semester of the nursing program including basic nursing technology skills.
A Nurse Technician must provide a copy of their grades (may be e-mailed directly from the school web-site) ! and school schedule for the next semester to his/her manager each semester. If the cumulative nursing GPA falls below 3.0 or if the student receives a grade of "D" or lower in any Nursing class regardless of the cumulative GPA, or they do not re-enroll in the Nursing Program for any reason, they are no longer able to be employed as a Nurse Technician. (N/A to VCH-P)
The Nurse Tech must take the NCLEX exam within a timeframe of 60 days post graduation date. After 60 days following graduation, the employee is no longer qualified for the Nurse Tech position and must apply for other positions for which s/he is qualified.
Must complete/validate the Clinical Skills Checklist for the Nurse Technician. (Must provide Clinical Skills Checklist from an approved school of nursing before beginning employment (VCH-P).)

Working knowledge of basic computer systems in order to complete data entry required.
Exposure to various hospital computer systems and safety systems (ex. IV pumps) preferred.
Basic working email knowledge required,
Ability to navigate the internet and Via Christi intranet required.
Ability to use multiple forms of communication devices such as telephones, paging systems, portable data devices.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers offered by the American Heart Association or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer offered ! by the Red Cross within 30 days post date of hire.
Ages of patient population are dependent upon the work setting, but could include Pediatric (2-12), Adolescent (13-18), Adult (19-64), and Geriatric (65 and over). (VCH-P)

Frequently required to push and pull items, such as patient beds, requiring an initial force of up to 75 lbs with a sustained force of up to 40 lbs.
Frequently required to carry or lift items weighing up to 50 pounds at waist height for distances up to 100 feet.
Frequently required to lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
Frequently required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing 100-400 pounds a! nd occasionally required to assist in maneuvering patients weighing ove! r 400 pounds.
Tolerate standing and walking for up to 6 hours at a time on hard and soft surfaces.
Frequently perform activities that require stooping, bending and reaching, squatting, balancing, and trunk twisting throughout the day.
Constantly able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form.
Occasionally required to sit in a stationary position for up to 30 minutes at one time.
Frequently able to detect and discern both loud and soft sounds such as patient calls, verbal orders, monitors, and phone calls.
Frequently able to use hands and fingers to perform simple and fine motor handling tasks, such as pinching and manipulating while pushing syringes, adjusting IVs, handling intricate medical equipment, taking vital signs, writing, and using a keyboard.
Frequently able to use different types of visual perceptions to perform activities such as moving medical equipment, evaluating patients, reading mo! nitors and charts, and reading computer screens.
Occasionally required to detect unusual odors that could indicate infection or other problems with a patient, or environmental issues such as smoke.
Working Conditions:
Occasionally exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation.
Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, communicable diseases, etc is routine.
